  1. stephen you are an inspirationto any thinking person.so glad you exist.love your style and content on QI .saw that interview you had .manic depressive .tricky to handle suuch great lows and suicidal lows. well done!
such a gentleman!a modern socrates without the hemlock.
    there is no god.
we are in a universe and totally dependent on it.
the laws of the universe have created us and no doubt many other sentient beings .out purpose is to go with that flow.we can resist it or aid it.nonetheless we feel better if we overcome personal obstacles and maybe even contribute to the world through our influence /children/ideas /writings.we die and that is it.it is so obvious to any medical person dealing with death and dying as I have.
all the philosophers have tried to advise us and even they have refined the approach since ancient greece /india.
we habve our vulnerabilities and religion tried to help with that.but they added other guff too.
my recommendation is that religions are fine provided they don'y harm society.because they have done.ethics golden rule etc are practical results of living together in groups from which we derive such benefits as opposed to the hermit.
end result we have the chance to connect to the larger picture not just intellectually but emotionally.the wonder is that we exist and that the earth is so benign .it is our heaven and we owe it gratitude for the air water sun space food shelter and out amazing ability to reproduce.I always cry at births (I have have had the privilege of catching 17 babies with my own hands)
we are evolving and as hitchens quoted around the time our sun is starting to fail we will be as different from now as we are now to bacteria.john rawls had a thought experiment that clearly proves how group membership ( not hermits) leads to a just society if we were born without awareness of our talents or heredity."veil of ignorance" you may have heard of.
advaita philosophy of india says same-we are so dependent and hence so connected to everything.love the in its biggest sense is connectedness-care empathy understanding the big picture -so simple!
