In Person Success - Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt

Carl Bildt served as Prime Minister of Sweden from 1991-1994 and as Sweden's Foreign Minister from 2006-2014. Mr. Bildt also served as co-chair of the Dayton Peace Conference which ended the Bosnian War in 1995.

Mr. Bildt was in town for a conference and I saw an advisory that he was holding a press conference downtown. I arrived at the venue of the press conference and after about half an hour of waiting, he arrived. He gladly signed an index card for me. After he had signed the autograph, I asked him if I could take a picture with him and his assistant said; "We actually have an engagement; its not possible right now" to which Mr. Bildt responded; "A quick selfie is always possible!" and he came leaned in for a picture. Not the best quality photo, but I'm glad I got it just the same!

In Person Success - Governor Martin O'Malley

Had a great encounter with one of my favourite US Politicians Martin O'Malley, the current Democrat Governor of Maryland. He has served as Governor since 2007 and, due to Maryland's gubernatorial term limits, will end his time as Governor in 2015. He is a very likely candidate for President of the United States in 2016.

Governor O'Malley was in town giving a speech to a political think tank, but unfortunately his speech fell on an afternoon when I had to be at work. I really wanted to meet him though, so at about 9:00 the morning of his event, I went to the hotel where it was taking place and waited in the hopes that he would come in early. At about 9:45 I spotted a black SUV pull up and a man who appeared to be a bodyguard step out! Sure enough, Governor O'Malley also got out of the vehicle and came inside.

I approached him and asked him for an autograph which he  said he would be happy to sign. He really liked the photo I had printed and showed it to his staff that were with him and told us about the event he was participating in when the photo was taken. I also told him a story about how he had sent me his autograph through the mail several years ago when he was Mayor of Baltimore. After he signed the autograph he also took a photo with me.

A very nice guy who I really think might just be the President one day.

TTM Success - Kirk Douglas

In the history of film there are few individuals who are as iconic and as legendary as the great Kirk Douglas. From Ace in the Hole to Paths of Glory to Gunfight at the OK Corral to his iconic performance in Spartacus; every movie he made was epic. He has been recognized for his acting with a Star on the Hollwood Walk of Fame, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, a 1994 Kennedy Center Honoree, and lifetime achievement awards from the Oscars, the American Film Institute, and the Screen Actors Guild.

In recent years, Mr. Douglas' health has not been great and he has largely stopped signing autographs aside from occasionally his books; but even that is often hit or miss. I decided to take a chance though, and wrote him a letter and enclosed my copy of his book hoping it would be signed.

I was so excited to come home to a package the other day that contained my book, duly signed and inscribed by this Hollywood great. Mr. Douglas also covered the shipping costs, returning the $15 I had sent him to cover return postage.

TTM Success - Actress Gloria Henry Success

Gloria Henry is an actress who is best known for playing Alice Mitchell, Dennis' mother, on the TV series Dennis the Menace from 1959-1963.

She signed and returned my photo and also sent me a short letter.

In Person Success - Former Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov

Mikhail Kasyanov served as Russia's Finance Minister from 1999-2000 and as Prime Minister of Russia from 2000-2004 under President Vladimir Putin. He and his government were eventually dismissed by Putin in 2004 and since then he has been one of Putin's most prominent critics.

Prime Minister Kasyanov was in town speaking recently and I went and saw his presentation. Afterwards he signed my photo and posed for a photo with me.

TTM Success - Former Secret Service Agent Timothy McCarthy

Got back former Secret Service Agent Tim McCarthy.

McCarthy was a member of the Secret Service assigned to the Presidential Protection detail for 8 years most notably serving as a member of Ronald Reagan's detail. During the 1981 assassination attempt of Ronald Reagan; Agent McCarthy put himself between the shooter and President Reagan taking a bullet in the abdomen. He is the only person in history to take a bullet for a US President while physically shielding them. He ended up making a full recovery and is still involved in law enforcement, serving as Police Chief in Orland Park, Illinois.

He signed and returned the photo I sent him in a total of 16 days.

TTM Success - Former German President Richard von Weizsäcker

Received an autograph back from the former German Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker.

Richard von Weizsäcker has an illustrious career in German politics serving as a member of the Bundestag from 1969-1981 and as Mayor of West Berlin from 1981-1984. He was elected President of Germany in 1984 and served 2 terms until 1994 overseeing the end of the Cold War and the reunification of the German state.

He signed the photo I sent and also returned the couple dollars I had sent him to cover return postage. I received it back in 120 days.

In Person success - Brandon Routh and Robert Picardo

Actors Brandon Routh and Robert Picardo were both in town for an event the other day and I managed to meet them as they were on their way out of town.

Routh is best known for playing Superman in the 2006 film Superman Returns. He has also appeared in the movies Zack and Miri Make a Porno and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and also had roles in the TV shows Chuck as Daniel Palmer and Arrow as Ray Palmer. 

Despite his handler saying that he didn't have time to sign; Brandon immediately stopped and agreed to sign on each for everyone and signed and personalized my Superman photo and also took a photo with me.

Robert Picardo is an Emmy nominated actor who is best known for his major roles in the TV shows Star Trek: Voyager, The Wonder Years, China Beach, and Stargate. Despite his numerous roles in such iconic TV series, I actually wanted to get him for my West Wing collection. I'm currently trying to get as many West Wing guest stars as I can and Robert appeared in an episode of the 5th season playing a prospective Supreme Court nominee. He gladly signed the photo I had printed from that episode and also posed for a picture with me.

TTM Success - TV Host Monty Hall

Received an autograph back from TV host Monty Hall.

He was best known as the creator and host of the game show Let's Make a Deal. He is an Emmy Award winner and has a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a plaque on Canada's Walk of Fame.

He signed and returned the photo I sent him in a total of 56 days.

TTM Success - Doolittle Raider David Thatcher

Got back a great historical success!

Staff Sergeant David Thatcher is one of 4 living men who participated in WWII's Doolittle Raid on Japan in retaliation to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. While the raid itself caused little actual damage to Japan, it did succeed in its goal of raising American morale and showing that Japan was not immune to attack. Staff Sgt. Thatcher was an engineer and gunner on Aircraft #7. 

He signed and returned the photo I sent him and also wrote me a short letter.

It took a total of 108 days.
